Breast cancer support group installs officers

Sister, Sister Breast Cancer Support Group installed its newest officers Sunday with the creation of its Grand Bahama Chapter during a survivors and installation luncheon.

Some 150 cancer survivors, their families and those committed to become trained to support victims of cancer savoured a heart-warming afternoon filled with laughter, knowledge and a few tears.

The message of survival was underscored from a skit by Actor Patrice Johnson on the importance of getting a mammogram, to the playful, yet sobering testimony of survivor and entertainer Dr. Doris Sears, "Rainbow the Christian Clown," to the powerful liturgical dance by Minister Vicki Smith.

The new chapter was established in April and the official installation was held at the Westin Grand Bahama Island at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort.

Fancy A Procreation Vacation

The latest marketing wheeze from the travel industry is the introduction of Procreation Vacations. The idea is that couples trying to have a baby often succeed when they're relaxed and so where better to make whoopee than on holiday somewhere nice?

The trend originated in America with the Westin hotel chain offering particular procreation-themed breaks. Guests who stay at the The Westin Grand Bahama Island can enjoy the following:

• Unlimited glasses of sea moss elixir for the future dad. Made from a marine plant mixed with evaporated milk, sugar and spices and sea moss has long been the Caribbeans aphrodisiac!

Unlimited bowls of pumpkin soup which according to the hotel chain is 'De rigueur among island women for conceiving'

One 50-minute couples massage with aromatherapy, an aid in regulating womens fertility cycles, and reflexology, known for boosting virility.

CTC Conference begins in GB

Taking advantage of the 29th Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC) being held in Grand Bahama, Prime Minister Perry Christie impressed upon tourism ministers at the official opening Sunday night, to forge a united front to have the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) postponed another two years.

Thirty-three countries are represented at this year's conference which is being held in the Grand Ballroom at Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Island at Our Lu-caya Beach and Golf Resort.

The theme for this conference is "Cooperation innovation, rejuvenation: Creating a brand-new Caribbean."

Before officially declaring the event open, the prime minister conveyed his concern about the new U.S. initiative which is expected to come into effect on January 8, 2007.

Birth of a new industry: Baby-making vacations

When Lucinda Hughes heard she would have to down sea moss elixirs while vacationing in the Bahamas, she was sure it would make her sick. Three months later, Hughes is very sick - every morning - and expecting her first baby in April.

As Hughes and her husband Kemry lounged on lush beaches and swam in their hotel's infinity pool, they sipped pumpkin soup and enjoyed couple's massages and reflexology. It was all aimed at enhancing the odds of babymaking during their three-day Procreation Vacation at the Westin at Our Lucaya Grand Bahama Island.

It's part of the latest trend that has hotels around the world luring conception-minded couples by providing everything from onsite sex doctors to age-old fertility boosters promised to hasten the pitter-patter of little feet.

Women ready to spend another holiday break in the sun

While their families are eating turkey and sharing stories over Thanksgiving dinner, members of the Terrapin women's basketball team will be miles away, with much more on its plate.

The Terps travel to Grand Bahama Island with their second family - their teammates - to play Gardner-Webb and either Mississippi or Northwestern as part of the two-night Junkanoo Jam tournament.

Don't feel bad for the Terps though; they still get a couple of days off in the sun to enjoy a catamaran boat ride and snorkeling in the Bahamas.

"Obviously in the Bahamas you get some great scenery and relaxing times as well," coach Brenda Frese said. "It's a great balance of both [vacation and work]. Once we start playing games Friday and Saturday, we're all business. But definitely, it's a low key approach to enjoy the time we're out there."

Last year, the Terps traveled to the U.S.

Trying to get pregnant? Book a procreation vacation

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- When Lucinda Hughes heard she would have to drink sea moss elixir while vacationing in the Bahamas, she was certain it would make her sick. Sure enough, three months later, Hughes is very sick -- every morning -- and expecting her first baby in April.

She got pregnant after she and her husband went on a three-day Procreation Vacation at a resort on Grand Bahama Island.

It's part of a trend in which hotels around the world are luring couples who are trying to have a baby. Resorts are offering on-site sex doctors, romantic advice and exotic food and drink calculated to put lovers in the mood and hasten the pitter-patter of little feet.

Even some obstetricians are promoting the trend. Dr. Jason James of Miami said he often encourages couples trying to have a baby to sneak away for a few days, and he often sees it work.
