Culinary oasis

Open and airy, with white shutters on the windows, an indoor palm tree here and there and the vibrant colors of the Caribbean, Bahama Breeze restaurant in Robinson Town Centre beckons diners with warm, tantalizing aromas and island music even before they can get out of their cars. It's meant to be an oasis -- an escape from the storms of everyday life, says managing chef John Michael Brown, and a way for people to discover the flair of Caribbean fare.

Open since March 2004, Bahama Breeze is one of a chain of 32 restaurants operating under Darden Restaurants Inc. of Orlando, Fla., the world's largest casual dining company, which also owns and operates Red Lobster, Olive Garden and Smokey Bones. However, the Robinson location differs from the norm, says Brown -- it's a prototype that's laid out differently from the others.

Interim Haiti leader and Boca Raton resident takes on critics

Port-au-Prince, Haiti — Since becoming interim prime minister of Haiti five months ago, Gérard Latortue has attracted his share of detractors.

Members of the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus and the Caribbean Community have refused to recognize his government. Human rights organizations say he has administered justice unevenly. And Haitians loyal to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide accuse him of being part of a U.S.-led coup-d'état against the departed leader.

But Latortue, a Boca Raton resident, said in an interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the criticism has more to do with the U.S. presidential elections than his policies.

"A lot of this is part of people who are fighting against the Bush administration," he said from a parlor in his private residence.

PLP says economy is more robust

The Opposition Free National Movement (FNM) should simply face the unchallengeable fact that the Bahamian people are better off today under the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) than ever before. This according to PLP Chairman Raynard Rigby, who claimed on Friday that the drastic fall in the overall unemployment rate in The Bahamas, proves that the economy is more robust than ever before.

"These results give credence to and further support the fact that economic transformation has taken root in The Bahamas," Mr. Rigby said. "In just four short years in office, the PLP government has been able to bring about an economic renaissance unparalleled in our modern history. Many Bahamians are now at work and those who wish to be employed can find work in The Bahamas," the PLP Chairman claimed.
