Bahama Islands News, Articles and Information

Eneas history revealed

The African Diaspora has not been kind to black people in this region who wish to trace their roots back to the Motherland. Most of the ancestral information perished in the Middle Passage. Bits and pieces appear from time to time, but are often not connected to a region, town or community.

It was a strange twist of fate how the Eneases became connected to their adopted past. We tell that story in following paragraphs.

Kendal Butler, has undertaken extensive research on boat-building in The Bahamas over the past 10 years, spurred on by the fact that his great, great, great grandfather, Isaacs Munroe of Exuma was a commercial schooner builder, who sold his boats to fishermen throughout the Bahamas. Butler has amassed hundreds of pages of data on boat-building from the 1800s right up to the present.

Lay-offs spark anger at Lyford Cay Club

The threat of a major strike at the Lyford Cay Club has prompted Ministry of Labor officials to meet with the employees today in a bid to avoid industrial action at the exclusive resort.

The move follows reports that employees are up in arms over the fact that long-serving employees', including managers and supervisors, positions are being made redundant or they are being fired and replaced by foreign workers. Reportedly, tensions are so high that workers are willing to walk off their jobs in an attempt to force management to address their concerns.

"We do have some uneasiness down at Lyford Cay Club and it is creating a big problem," said one source who spoke to The Nassau Guardian yesterday on the condition of anonymity. "There is a lot of unhappiness among the employees," the source claimed.

Stiff test for Bermuda

IN the opening qualifying round of the Under-20 World Cup Bermuda smashed 18 goals past their opponents the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
But it is going to be hard to get to double figures when the next round is staged next week.
On Sunday the team departs for Haiti to play in the second round and national assistant coach Paul Scope knows that the players will have a tough task in order to get through to the last four in the Caribbean round.
Bermuda will play hosts Haiti, Jamaica and the Netherland Antilles.
"As well as our boys did down in St. Croix, seeing off BVI, USVI and Bahamas, we know we will have to step it up to another level against Netherland Antilles, Jamaica and Haiti," said Scope this week.
Scope is irked that the schedule for this round in Group G has been changed.

A US-Caribbean Free Trade Area?

Hardbeatnews, NEW YORK, N.Y., Weds. Nov. 22, 2006: Should Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries enter a Free Trade Agreement with the United States? A few readers interpreted an observation that I made in my commentary (US mid-term elections and the Caribbean) to mean that I was advocating such an agreement.

In fact, I was not. All that I did was to point out that the Caribbean is yet to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement with the US; CARICOM has not seriously focused on such an agreement; and time may be running out to get negotiations for such an agreement firmly underway with the present US administration since the authority that Congress gave President George W. Bush to sign such agreements ends in July 2007.

The matter of whether CARICOM countries should enter an FTA with the US is complex. What are the arguments for CARICOM countries entering an FTA with the US?

The main argument is that the US has entered FTAs with other ountries whose goods and services compete with CARICOMs in the US market.

Rumour was a terrible, calculated lie

The legal divide at the Grand Bahama Port Author-ity is most unfortunate. I can only imagine the circumstances and pain that would have forced Sir Jack Hay-ward to publicly declare his ownership percentage and the equal hurt and situations that led Edward St. George's widow, Lady Henrietta St. George, and his children to openly challenge the same.

While the courts will no doubt make the final decision, it is sad – indeed cruel – that some would allow their selfish agendas to create fear and chaos. A terrible rumour took a vicious flight around Freeport this past week. The rumour suggested that a significant number of employees at the Grand Bahama Port Authority will be terminated in short order and that Chairman Hannes Babak and Sir Jack were working on the packages. It is a terrible, calculated lie – an untruth to place Babak and Sir Jack in a negative light among staff at GBPA.
