Baptist Women unite in prayer

Baptist church women across the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and the South West Pacific are joining hearts and voices for one day of prayer.

Baptist Women's World Day of Prayer was started in 1948 and is held every year by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Women's Department on the first Monday in November.

The event will be held in all Baptist churches of the Grand Bahama district on Monday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m. under the theme: "Seeing with new eyes."

Valurine Bain-Pinder, BWA President for the Grand Bahama district revealed that women throughout the seven continental unions are coming on one accord.

In the Caribbean, the focus is being placed on abused children, their abusers, violence against women, those guilty of such violence, AIDS, the HIV epidemic throughout the islands and the rest of the world, and the victims of hurricanes and other natural disasters.

The Bilney Lane Children's Home

BCMC from the Government of The Bahamas asking them to consider entering into a management agreement with themselves to manage The Bilney Lane Children's Home.

This was considered a very exciting challenge for the BCMC as a new Conference. Methodists have long been active in this type of Ministry, and after visits to the Home and several meetings with the then Director of Social Services, Barbara Carey, the Assistant Director, Blanche Deveaux and the Deputy Permanent Secretary, the BCMC's own St. Michael's member, Maxwell Poitier, the BCMC accepted the challenge and adopted the Home on June 01, 1992.

The Home on Bilney Lane, which is off Shirley Street, was formerly a Clinic. Since 1988, it had been run as a Home for children, who for various reasons are in the care of the Department of Social Services, by The Salvation Army, who of course, in their inimitable style of selfless dedication and caring set high standards for the BCMC to follow.

Historic Day at Holy Hill

TOWN OF ERIN - Holy Hill began a new chapter in its history Sunday as Archbishop Timothy Dolan, the Discalced Carmelite community and about a thousand others celebrated the shrines elevation to a minor basilica.

Basilica is a title of honor given to churches by papal decree because of their antiquity, dignity, historical importance or significance as centers of worship.

The Rev. Mark DeVelis, the prior at the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, read the papal decree in both Latin and English, which was answered by applause from those that filled the pews and lined the walls of the church.

"You know this is a historic occasion," Archbishop Timothy Dolan told the congregation before the sermon. "You are the only people in the state of Wisconsin that are not deer hunting or watching the Packer game."

Turning to the heart of his homily, Dolan spoke of other holy hills: Mt.
