Rolle wants security plan implemented

The mandate of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) should be revisited. This was the final charge from Commodore Davy Rolle, as he officially retired from his post after 27 years and six months of service. The leadership baton was passed to Lt. Commander Clifford Scavella during an historic change of command ceremony at the Coral Harbour base on Thursday.

Before vacating his post, Commodore Rolle expressed his major concerns and challenges of the RBDF, and encouraged government officials, including Prime Minister Perry Christie and Minister of National Security Cynthia Pratt, to move forward with its proposal to develop a national security plan for The Bahamas. "Such a Plan would focus not only on narcotics trafficking, illegal migration, poaching, environmental disasters and terrorism, but [should be] inclusive of deliberate joint law enforcement coordination and activities, with central data bases and intelligence," Commodore Rolle said.

Min. of Labor slapped with injunction

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Training was slapped with an injunction on Monday forcing the government agency to hold off on an election poll that was to be held today to decide which union would represent line-staff employees at the Sandals Royal Bahamian resort.

Labour Director Harcourt Brown confirmed with The Guardian that the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU), in conjunction with Sandals management, stopped the voting process. "This injunction pretty much ties our hands so there won't be any poll until such time as that injunction has been dealt with," Mr Brown disclosed.

For months, the BHCAWU and the Bahamas Hotel Maintenance and Allied Workers Union (BHMAWU) have been battling for the right to be the bargaining agent for the all-inclusive resort employees.

Overcoming the odds: growing a business from the Caribbean

When I created the first all-inclusive hotel in Jamaica, 30 years ago and a year later, the world's first couples-only all-inclusive hotel, it was not part of a grand design to develop a far-flung international business.

At that time, the mid to late seventies, Jamaica was experiencing great social and economic upheaval and our tourist industry had all but collapsed.

Having been in the industry for virtually all of my working career, I was not prepared to let it die.

Another consideration was the fact that, without tourism, Jamaica would implode economically and socially.

I therefore sought to create a product that would have such appeal that travellers would seek it out despite any negatives they may have heard about Jamaica.

Low Room Rate

The holiday I created allowed persons with moderate budgets to live richly on vacation without any worry about money.
