New York money-laundering case against Quebecer delayed until next ...

NEW YORK (CP) - A Quebec investment banker held in New York on charges of laundering US$1 billion in illicit money made a brief appearance in U.S. federal court Tuesday to attend a hearing on how to proceed with the case against him.

U.S. federal prosecutors accuse Martin Tremblay of Saguenay, Que., of using his Bahamas-based investment services company Dominion Investments Ltd. to launder proceeds from a host of illegal activities, including drug trafficking and tax-evasion schemes.

Federal Judge John Keenan offered to set a trial date, but prosecutors and Tremblay's defence lawyer asked for a further delay in the proceedings.

Tremblay is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 11.

Wearing a prison uniform, Tremblay said nothing during his appearance in the largely empty courtroom in lower Manhattan.
