Message-stuffed bottle spurs excitement

I thought the bottle would most likely hit a rock and break before anybody had a chance to read it, Harvela wrote this week.

Although the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea and the Baltic Sea separated Quintana from Harvela, who lives in the almost snowy Helsinki, Finland, a bottle connected them.

The bottle, which sat on the cafeteria table at Fleming Elementary School in Freeport, was clutched by 7-year-old Jacob Carter, who eagerly reopened the bottle, releasing the strong smell of fermented wine. As he sat, he pulled out the letter as his feet, too short to reach the floor, began to dangle quickly as he read.

Hello! I am a 12-year old girl (or at least I was in the year 2006) and this message left Dominica in the Caribbean islands on March 22, 2006, Carter read.

Women ready to spend another holiday break in the sun

While their families are eating turkey and sharing stories over Thanksgiving dinner, members of the Terrapin women's basketball team will be miles away, with much more on its plate.

The Terps travel to Grand Bahama Island with their second family - their teammates - to play Gardner-Webb and either Mississippi or Northwestern as part of the two-night Junkanoo Jam tournament.

Don't feel bad for the Terps though; they still get a couple of days off in the sun to enjoy a catamaran boat ride and snorkeling in the Bahamas.

"Obviously in the Bahamas you get some great scenery and relaxing times as well," coach Brenda Frese said. "It's a great balance of both [vacation and work]. Once we start playing games Friday and Saturday, we're all business. But definitely, it's a low key approach to enjoy the time we're out there."

Last year, the Terps traveled to the U.S.

Young ‘Minister’ gets to grips with new role

Nickolas DaCosta samples the winning entry by Jonathan Pedley for the conch stew competition at Taste of Cayman. Shown here are Jonathans parents, Arthurlyn and Philip Pedley.

Since stepping into his new role as Junior Minister of Tourism Nickolas DaCosta, has been abusy young man.

He made his debut appearance at the Travel & Leisures Caribbean Youth Congress in Grand Bahama Island recently and since then he has been taking his position seriously.

Mr DaCosta, and his mother, Tammy DaCosta, took the time to attend some local Cayman Islands Tourism Association events including Taste of Cayman and the Tourism Stingray Awards Gala.

Mr DaCosta is a student from Cayman Brac High School and he recently took over the role of Junior Tourism Minister from Thea Bush.

Victims' fury at failed saving scheme

LOUISE McDaid is bracing herself for a heartbreaking Christmas.

Like thousands of other victims of last month's collapse of the Farepak Christmas hamper company, she has lost cash meant to pay for presents, in her case £400 to buy gifts for her family including her two children.

COB making waves through basketball

Although cricket was termed the national sport of the country, basketball will be the vehicle in which the College/University of The Bahamas (COB) plans to drive its athletic programs to a higher level. The school recently sent its men and women's basketball teams to the United States (US) where they competed in South Florida and New York, for the first time in COB's history, in actual college basketball games.

"What we're in the process of doing - Greg Harshaw and myself - we are establishing 'The Bahamas Inter-collegiate/Tertiary Basketball League', which is comprised of BTVI, Bahamas Baptist College, Galilee College, COB and COB in Grand Bahama. We're trying to start our own tertiary/college league, from the Bahamian/Bahamas perspective, and that will be our league, starting in January for three months," said COB Student Affairs Director, and men's basketball Head Coach Sean Bastian.
