Swift justice in Grand Bahama

Questions raised in a letter to the editor on Friday by Freeport attorney Kwai Thompson with regard to the swift justice system are really deserving of some answers.

Swift justice is not a new invention in the Bahamian system. It came about in the mid-1990s to combat and alleviate the huge backlog that was being experienced in getting cases through the court system and to eliminate the need for accused persons being held on remand for inordinate lengths of time with no clear indication as to when they would finally get to court and either be found not guilty or convicted.

Among the challenges outlined by Mr Thompson, there are several that can be deemed critical to the administration of justice in Grand Bahama and should be addressed immediately:

The fact that drugs evidence must be flown into New Providence for examination; the need for firearms and forensic evidence to be examined in Nassau; and the fact that there are no holding or prison facilities in Grand Bahama are paramount.

Entry pathway through Haiti

Because it detected an increase in third-country nationals, including Pakistanis and Palestinians, attempting to sneak into the United States from Haiti, and because it feared lax immigration enforcement would lead to a new boatlift from that country, the State Department recently urged the White House to adopt a policy of detaining illegal aliens arriving by boat from Haiti until they could be deported or granted asylum. When Attorney General John Ashcroft released a legal opinion last week accepting State's advice, he was castigated by a lead editorial in The Washington Post. Meanwhile, a big story fell through the cracks : Secretary of State Colin Powell's department - frequently depicted as the most dovish in the administration - is confirming that Middle Eastern nationals have been trying to penetrate the U.S.

CTO signs agreement with CDERA to minimize negative impact from ...

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) to work together to minimize the negative impact of disasters on the sustainable development of the Caribbean tourism industry.

CDERA is a regional inter-governmental agency established in 1991 by an agreement of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM (the Caribbean Regional Community).

CTO and CDERA will work together to develop a disaster risk management strategy framework for the tourism sector as well as build the capacity of national tourism organizations to deal with disasters.

CDERA will assist any participating CTO member state that requests such assistance and make an immediate and coordinated response to any disastrous event affecting that participating CTO member state.
