Soldiers can cruise to the Bahamas

MIAMI -- For the past few years, Discovery Cruise Line offered a special program for Florida residents serving in the military overseas.

To thank them for their service, Discovery and its participating media partners are offering those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan at any time during 2005 a free Discovery day cruise to Grand Bahama Island. This year, however, Discovery is expanding the program to include ALL military personnel and not just to those who are residents of Florida.

"We launched this program two years ago and it was so popular that we decided to extend it nationwide to include all such personnel wherever they live," said Hanns J. Hahn, general manager of Discovery. "Previously, the program was limited to Florida residents. We found that it is a great morale booster and getting the holiday card has meant a lot to our troops."

The offer, which is valid until December 31, 2007, is for a free round trip cruise to Grand Bahama, including the cost of all meals on board, all service charges, taxes, and Bahamian departure fees.

Lessons in Creole

Faced with a communication barrier in the classroom, some teachers are learning a second language to get across to their Creole-speaking students.

It is, one education official says, a sign of the times.

Director of Education Cecil Thompson says the official language in The Bahamas is English and that's how we communicate in our schools, but the reality is that there are also some students entering the school who speak a different language.

The official language in The Bahamas is English and that's how we communicate in our schools, but Director of Education Cecil Thompson says the reality is that there are also some students entering the school who speak a different language.

For decades, classrooms in public schools across the country have been shared with students of Haitian descent who, sometimes, spoke no English when they arrived in The Bahamas.

BVA president gives senior teams praise after CARICOM ...

Word coming from the Barbados Volleyball Association (BVA) is that the executive is elated by the performances of the national sides, after completing yet another successful CARICOM Volleyball Championships, where Barbados captured their tenth mens title and the womens team went down to Trinidad in a thrilling five set final.

This is according to BVA President, John Griffith, who expressed his gratification at the countrys showing at the 11th CVCs in Bahamas this month. It hasnt been a smooth year for volleyball in Barbados, but the BVA executive is very pleased with the teams performances in Bahamas stated Griffith.

Things were not easy, as the gymnasium was not available for our preparations, so the men had to do most of their training at the Springer School and the netball stadium, while the girls trained at BCC (Barbados Community College).

Griffith was especially delighted with the fact that Barbados senior men continued their dominance of the regional games after a disappointing showing at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) games in Cartagena, Columbia earlier this year.
