bahama islandBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationShoreline Properties Approaching Sell-Out of Oceanfront Bahamian-Style HomesGrand Bahama Island (PRWEB) August 10, 2006 -- With only 23 homes left, Shoreline, located on Fortune Beach within Grand Bahama Island, is a commodity that many buyers recognize as a hot property. With an amazing rate of 85-90% of prospects turning into buyers, Shoreline Properties' statistics are staggering. .Native Bahamian tells of country's traditionsSituated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean lies The Bahamas, an island chain of adventure with 700 islands and cays. The pristine beaches, warm sunshine and warm people create a tourist paradise and vacation haven for foreigners, but to this international student, the Bahamas is where I call home. As the Bahamas gradually become a melting pot of cultures, Bahamians are still being true to their "navel strings" buried deep across this archipelago. From Grand Bahama Island in the north to Inagua Island in the south, the words colour and cheque (bank) are still spelled in that "weird" way of the British English. We still do the "strange" thing of driving on the left, another British custom. Most of the residents in this archipelago live on New Providence Island in the city of Nassau, with rest of the population living on Family Islands. Balancing conch fishing with big developmentBimini has always been a beer-and-fried-fish kind of place. And the most salient feature of West End, the settlement on the westernmost tip of Grand Bahama Island, has been the mountains of conch shells that line the road. But both places are in the midst of a metamorphosis. A building boom that will bring a luxury hotel, pricey vacation homes, a golf course and gambling casino to rustic, laid-back Bimini is already underway on the island that has long been a favorite of sports fishermen. And a development company from Celebration, Fla., is seeking final approval to build a $5 billion resort project, Ginn sur Mer, in West End. It's already showing seaside home sites to prospective buyers. As today's cover story (''Building Up the Bahamas,'' page 22) by reporter Amy Martinez points out, large-scale and expensive resort projects and marinas are going up all over the 700-island nation.
Soldiers can cruise to the BahamasMIAMI -- For the past few years, Discovery Cruise Line offered a special program for Florida residents serving in the military overseas. To thank them for their service, Discovery and its participating media partners are offering those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan at any time during 2005 a free Discovery day cruise to Grand Bahama Island. This year, however, Discovery is expanding the program to include ALL military personnel and not just to those who are residents of Florida. "We launched this program two years ago and it was so popular that we decided to extend it nationwide to include all such personnel wherever they live," said Hanns J. Hahn, general manager of Discovery. "Previously, the program was limited to Florida residents. We found that it is a great morale booster and getting the holiday card has meant a lot to our troops." The offer, which is valid until December 31, 2007, is for a free round trip cruise to Grand Bahama, including the cost of all meals on board, all service charges, taxes, and Bahamian departure fees.
Staying clear of the hurricanes is as easy as ABCFinding a dry Caribbean beach in hurricane season is always a gamble, but travelers can greatly sweeten their odds by choosing the right island. The safest bets: Aruba, Bonaire or Curac¸ao, the so-called ABC islands, all located at the southernmost tip of the Lesser Antilles; Trinidad and Tobago, perched beyond the southern end of the Windward chain; and Margarita Island, just off the coast of Venezuela. Visit any of these islands in hurricane season, and you'll face only a 2 percent chance of encountering a serious storm. And the islands most likely to be hit? Grand Bahama Island has been hit by 40 hurricanes in 150 years. Bermuda and the Virgin Islands are also frequently affected by heavy storms and hurricanes. Weather experts are quick to point out that no island is totally hurricane-free.
