Fatal mix for jet: wrong turn and a turned back

The sole air-traffic controller on duty turned his back to do a ''traffic count'' as Comair Flight 5191 veered down the wrong runway Sunday in Lexington, Ky., then crashed after takeoff, leaving only one survivor -- a first officer from Broward County.

Federal Aviation Administration guidelines call for two controllers in the tower, but officials at Blue Grass Airport scheduled only one to work the shift that morning, the FAA said Tuesday.

In an interview with The Miami Herald, the mother of First Officer James Polehinke questioned why the controllers failed to notice that the plane was on the wrong runway.

''That runway had no lights. And where was the guy in the tower who should have told him he was on the wrong runway?'' said Polehinke's mother, Honey Jackson of Sunny Isles Beach.

Two die in car crashes

Two young men died in separate car crashes over the holiday weekend, bringing the number of traffic fatalities for the year to 31.

One of the victims, who was not identified, died after being thrown from a car on Blue Hill Road early yesterday morning; while Kenton Gibson, 22, died when the car he was in overturned on Queen's Highway in Andros.

In the New Providence accident, the victim was sitting in the back seat of a convertible navy blue Ford Mustang that was being driven near the Golden Gates Shopping Centre when the incident occurred, police said.

"The driver [of the Mustang], who is believed to be a female, was overtaking another vehicle and lost control of her car," Inspector Walter Evans told the Nassau Guardian yesterday.

"A male rear seat passenger fell from the vehicle and another car that was travelling south struck him.

Unrest brews in union

A rift has developed between leaders of the Bahamas Utilities Services and Allied Workers Union and its rank and file members.

Scores of angry BUSAWU members lodged a complaint yesterday with the Department of Labour seeking its intervention in a matter related to the promotion of persons to the union hierarchy without elections being held.

Reportedly, BUSAWU president Carmen Kemp promoted Tabitha Davis (a former Trustee) and Brenda Basden to the positions of Secretary General and Assistant Treasurer respectively, without conducting elections.

Both posts became vacant about five months ago as a result of the elected officers being promoted to the middle management ranks of the government-owned corporation.

But according to Huedley Moss, advisor to sundry members of the Water and Sewerage Corporation and employees, BUSAWU's Constitution does not give any such empowerment to the officers to make such a move.

Ingraham stresses need for decisive leadership

The need for firm, decisive leadership and boosting the economy of Grand Bahama were just two of the concerns addressed by Free National Movement Leader Hubert A. Ingraham Saturday evening.

Ingraham was in Grand Bahama celebrating with hundreds of FNM officers and supporters as the party commemorated the anniversary of FNM's historic general election victory on August 19, 1992.

"In our next election the issue is going to be leadership, something the governing party has not provided and something that the FNM will provide," said Ingraham. "Back in 1992 you called for the FNM's 'delivery boy' to rescue you. Now it is 2006 and the so-called delivery boy is a man now, a man mellowed by the passage of time, wiser by experience and more than willing to confront the challenges ahead."

Ingraham said he is ready willing and able to provide the leadership needed at this point and time in the country's history.
