bahama cruiseBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationSoldiers can cruise to the BahamasMIAMI -- For the past few years, Discovery Cruise Line offered a special program for Florida residents serving in the military overseas. To thank them for their service, Discovery and its participating media partners are offering those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan at any time during 2005 a free Discovery day cruise to Grand Bahama Island. This year, however, Discovery is expanding the program to include ALL military personnel and not just to those who are residents of Florida. "We launched this program two years ago and it was so popular that we decided to extend it nationwide to include all such personnel wherever they live," said Hanns J. Hahn, general manager of Discovery. "Previously, the program was limited to Florida residents. We found that it is a great morale booster and getting the holiday card has meant a lot to our troops." The offer, which is valid until December 31, 2007, is for a free round trip cruise to Grand Bahama, including the cost of all meals on board, all service charges, taxes, and Bahamian departure fees.

Land of Lakes Choirboys hit high noteJust sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of an awarding trip, that started out with 33 choir boys aboard one giant ship. And if that trip, destined for the Bahamas, wasn't good enough, winning an overall choir championship competition certainly made it worthwhile. The Land of Lakes Choirboys, made up of boys from around Central Minnesota ages 9 to 14, won the 2006 Cruise Festival Overall Grand Championship Award, beating out 49 other choirs (some including men's, women's and gospel choirs) from around the country in the process, and accomplishing something never achieved before: a perfect score. That unprecedented score came from Auburn University professor Richard Good, the judge of the cruise contest. Riley Lindell, a 12-year-old attending Monticello Middle School and five-year member of the choir, said while the group felt pretty confident, the award, and the score, both came as surprises. Ernesto hits tourismTourism officials have projected an estimated loss of more than half a million dollars as a result of lost air and sea arrivals due to Tropical Storm Ernesto. The recently released Ministry of Tourism figures also revealed that more than half of the $575,000 loss occurred in Nassau. However, tourism officials maintained that the loss was minimal. "The passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto has resulted in rerouting and cancellation of cruise ships and the loss of Florida originating flights to The Bahamas but this is not expected to have a long term negative effect on the industry," said the Ministry of Tourism press release. "There has also been some minimal impact on hotel occupancy. "The Ministry of Tourism estimates that as a result of the cancellation of flights and rerouting of cruise ships revenue loss to The Bahamas may be minimal," it continued.
