She enjoys empowering people

When Malvise Bastian scrolls through her childhood, rummaging around for the signs that first pointed her into the field of hospitality, she chuckles at a particular memory; plaiting together the loose strands of her personality with her infatuation with the industry.

Whenever anyone knocked at the door of the home she grew up in, Bastian was always the one her sisters pushed forward to answer it. "I would go and shout 'who is it," she laughs. "I always had a bold spirit. I was never afraid of people."

As she grew, the layers of Bastian's fearlessness thawed to reveal a genuine love for dealing with people. She entered the hospitality industry shortly after high school, rising as steadily and as naturally as a fledgling whose wings gain strength with each flight.

(AFX UK Focus) 2006-08-29 06:53 GMT: US, Cuba brace amid fears tropical storm Ernesto will regain hurricane strength

MIAMI, Fla (AFX) - The US southeast braced for a possible one-two punch by Ernesto, which could slam Florida at tropical storm strength, head out to sea again and return to land to hit South Carolina as a hurricane.

The storm lost much of its power as it swirled over mountainous areas of eastern Cuba, leading weather experts to revise earlier forecasts that it would regain hurricane status before its anticipated Florida landfall.

Projections by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) suggest the tropical storm would slam ashore near Miami late Tuesday or early Wednesday, head back out to the Atlantic a few hours later and barrel ashore again in South Carolina.

By the time it reaches South Carolina, the storm could have regained the strength it had reached on Sunday when it became this year's first hurricane before losing some of its power.

Abaco deathtraps fears

A senior government official fears the homes of 1,000 squatter families in north and central Abaco could become deathtraps during a serious hurricane.

District Works Controller, Roland Bevans, said yesterday that all of the makeshift plywood shacks in the Mud, Pigeon Peas, Sand Banks and Hidden Valley villages could crumble if hit by a violent storm.

Though he and his team of inspectors have worked feverishly to uphold a ban on construction in the shantytowns, by executive order they are forbidden to touch the estimated 750 illegal structures that exist. Thus, on one hand the government has ordered a stop to all construction in the Haitian villages, while on the other, it has insisted that none of the existing shacks be demolished. It also plays as a host, of sorts, to many of the illegal dwellers who have built on crown land.
