Red Lobster and Olive Garden July sales flat
Darden Restaurants Inc. reported slightly lower sales for its main brands, Olive Garden and Red Lobster for the four-week period ending July 30.In the Tampa Bay area, there are 14 Red Lobster, 11 Olive Garden, four Smokey Bones and one Bahama Breeze restaurants.

A new holiday promotion from the NAPA Under Car Sales Group will give service dealers the opportunity to earn back up to 100% of their holiday gift card purchases.Here's how the "What's UNDER Your CAR this Holiday Season?" promotion works.
1. First, service dealers choose gift cards from some of today's most popular stores and restaurants, including Applebee's, Baby Gap, Bahama Breeze, Bath & Body Works, Best Buy, Cabela's, Chili's, Gap, Gap Kids, Home Depot, JCPenny, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart.
Gift cards must be purchased by Dec. 31, 2006.
2. By purchasing participating NAPA Under Car products in the first quarter of 2007, service dealers can earn back 100% of the ordered gift card value. Products include NAPA brand rack & pinion steering parts, exhaust systems, U-joints, clutches, power steering parts, bearings, oil seals, shocks, struts and steering pumps, plus Napa MaxDrive CV shafts.

Darden Restaurants Inc. said Thursday same-store sales at its Olive Garden chain grew 2 percent to 3 percent in July, while Red Lobster saw a 2 percent decline for the same period.Same-store sales, a widely watched gauge of business performance, measure sales at restaurants open at least a year.
At Olive Garden, the gain came from a 1 percent to 2 percent increase in the number of customers and up to a 1 percent rise in the average check, fostered by price increases.
Red Lobster said the number of customers visiting its restaurant fell by 4 percent to 5 percent, but price increases sent the average check up 2 percent to 3 percent.
Darden also owns the Bahama Breeze restaurant chain and Smokey Bones Barbeque & Grill.
The company's stock closed Thursday up 40 cents to $34.90 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Council releases list of family-friendly ads
The Parents Television Council, which monitors sex, violence and profanity in broadcasting, has released its annual list of the 10 best advertisers with high decency standards and the 10 worst.Camden-based Campbell Soup Co. took second place among the council's best advertisers after Coca-Cola Enterprises for the frequency that they both sponsor "wholesome, family-oriented shows."
Others on the list, in descending order, are The Walt Disney Co.; Ford; Cingular Wireless; Altria Group, a food company that includes Kraft, Maxwell House, Oscar Mayer and more; Dream Works; Schering-Plough Corp., a pharmaceutical firm that makes Claritin and Dr. Scholls; Darden Restaurants, parent of Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Bahama Breeze; and Sears Corp.
Six of the advertisers that frequently sponsor "graphic content" are automakers.
Miss Grand Bahama pageant to return
After its five-year hiatus, officials of the Miss Grand Bahama Pageant have announced the return of the renown competition which has been modernized for young women on the island.Declaring plans to launch the pageant in October of this year, Glen Davis, organizer and committee member said that the return was a thought out process.
"When the Grand Bahama pageant was up many years back, we had a lot of quality young ladies competing at that time," he said.
"We remembered when they were the cream of the crop and competing in national contests. That is something we are trying to resurrect again."
Davis said the committee of the pageant intends to keep that same quality, but with a few adjustments.
"Back when Miss Grand Bahama was an annual event, it was glorified and so we want to get back to that era.
'Potcakes' receive warm welcome in Florida
Nearly two dozen pups were flown to Florida from Grand Bahama to take up temporary residence at the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach before they are adopted into new families.The puppies, known in The Bahamas as potcakes, are mixed-breed dogs and range in age from eight to 16 weeks.
In fact, they received a warm reception when they arrived in Ft. Lauderdale with the U.S. media waiting.
The Humane Society of Grand Bahama has dubbed this new programme "Operation Puppy Lift" which has been running for the last two years.
Another 20 were sent over to the Florida humane society two weeks ago.
"This group is one of the biggest shelters in Palm Beach County and they heard about our problem and that we had so many puppies and they can find homes for them," HSGB Managing Director Elizabeth "Tip" Burrows told The Freeport News.
Bimini fears a paradise lost to builder
For decades, all it has taken to lure tourists to this Bahamian island 48 miles east of Florida has been clear water, world-class fishing and the lack of just about everything else.So Lloyd ''Duda'' Edgecombe, a Bimini district council member, questions the wisdom of Miami developers who want to build a 250-room hotel, 18-hole golf course, 550-slip marina and glitzy casino on a flattened strip of sand once thick with marshes and mangroves.
The project, the Bimini Bay Resort and Casino, is far from the largest development in the Bahamas, but it's massive by Bimini standards. It will ultimately cover a tenth of the island, and developers promise it will create jobs for the entire population of 1,700.
But some critics worry it's also an example of how such mega-projects threaten the environment and the traditional island lifestyle that beckons visitors to places like Bimini in the first place.
