Tropical Storm Forms Near Puerto Rico, May Strengthen (Update1)

Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical Storm Chris, the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed in the Caribbean southeast of Puerto Rico and is forecast to strengthen.

The storm had sustained winds of almost 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour and was about 175 miles east of the island of Antigua, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said today in an online advisory at 5 a.m. Miami time.

Chris is heading west-northwest at 9 mph and is expected to move over or near the northern Leeward Islands late today or early tomorrow, the center in Miami said. Tropical storms have sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph, becoming hurricanes at 74 mph.

A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for Puerto Rico, the U.S Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Minister says 'be careful what you tell investors'

Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchombe encouraged Bahamians to spend more time preparing themselves for opportunities that may arise and less time quarreling over their present conditions.

He was responding to the cloud of confusion over the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) and the controversial public forum that stemmed from it.

"If we quarrel about the past and present, we have lost the future," he said, quoting from the words on the Bust of Winston Churchill.

Minister Wilchombe was speaking at the Rotary Club of Freeport's regular weekly meeting at the Ruby Swiss Restaurant where he shared his views on the situation.

He said that a collection of divergent views on the Grand Bahama Port Authority have swept across the Magic City like a brisk summer breeze with results that can be far greater and more damaging than Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma.

Ernesto Hits Cuba; Hurricane Watch for Southern Florida

Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical Storm Ernesto, which brought torrential rains to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, made landfall in southeastern Cuba this morning and may reintensify into a hurricane after it passes over the island.

The storm's center hit Cuba's southeastern coast sometime after 8 a.m. New York time, said Mark McInerney, a meteorologist with the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. Ernesto's center was about 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Guantanamo as of 8 a.m., moving northwest at about 12 mph (19 kph), and its maximum sustained winds dropped to about 45 mph from 50 mph.

Ernesto is expected to weaken further over Cuba, then regain strength when it moves back over water later today, the hurricane center said. The storm is forecast to hit the southern tip of Florida in the early morning of Aug.
