bahama breeze menuBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationPart of the larger scheme of thingsSometimes, living on a small speck in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, we tend to forget that we are attached to the rest of the planet ... not to mention the universe. And so our concerns over the rapid urbanisation of Cayman seem to be just that - our overdevelopment problems. But, in fact, they reflect what is happening throughout the region, if not the planet as a whole. The tragic effects of the Indonesian tsunami showed us that the destruction of coastal habitat - whether mangroves, coral reefs or sea grass - had a very clear connection to the disaster. Trash the protective ecosystems to build shrimp farms and resorts, and you reap the consequences: death and destruction. Entire communities were wiped out by tidal waves where their protection was gone; other villages, with their buffers intact, survived.
Comair president faces new hurdle in company's fight for survivalCINCINNATI - In three months as Comair's president, Don Bornhorst has dealt with court battles, tough labor negotiations and - most recently - a crash of one of his airline's planes that killed 49 people.Bornhorst, who has kept a relatively low profile since his appointment at the struggling Delta Air Lines subsidiary, was thrust into the public eye Sunday as the man leading the company in the aftermath of the worst American plane disaster in nearly five years. "It's a huge balancing act trying to keep the public well informed and yet be respectful to the families and investigating agencies," said Ron Reber, president and chief operating officer of SkyWest Airlines, another Delta Connection carrier. "It's a heavy, heavy burden, and from all appearances, Don shouldered it very well." Bornhorst raised some eyebrows this week with Comair's offer to pay $25,000 per passenger to each family who lost a loved one.

Players urged to start preparing for tourneyThe Bahamas Rugby Football Union (BRFU) is urging players to get in shape for the upcoming Caribbean Zone 7's Championship being hosted in Barbados. The tournament will include men's and women's teams from most of the Caribbean nations as well as Mexico, Canada and the United States. Training camp begins before the end of this month, with about 10 weeks left to prepare for the tournament."If we are going to mount a serious challenge at this tournament then the vast majority of the team need to work on their weaknesses, be it their fitness, strength or skill level, or even a combination of all three," said training camp co-ordinator Andrew Davies. He has indicated to players that while they were lucky enough to qualify for the Caribbean Zone Championship with sub-par fitness, they won't be as fortunate in the upcoming event if their levels aren't improved.
Space shuttle launch faces more delay, questionsCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The chances that the space shuttle Atlantis would be launched this week diminished by the hour yesterday as NASA prepared for Tropical Storm Ernesto and the possibility of moving the spacecraft into shelter.NASA managers planned to meet early today before making a final call on whether to move Atlantis indoors or try to launch tomorrow. There was a 30 percent chance that weather would prohibit a launch tomorrow, and the forecast worsened as the week progressed. Preparations already were underway for a rollback. Yesterday, workers rolled to the launch pad a gigantic crane that could be used to move generators and other heavy gear in case the shuttle is moved back to the protection of the enormous Vehicle Assembly Building. The huge crawler-transporter vehicle that would carry the shuttle was being run through tests, and crews prepared to make room inside the assembly building to accommodate the shuttle.

It would be the first hurricane to hit the United States this year. Memories of Katrina and the seven hurricanes that have struck Florida since 2004 were fresh in the minds of many. "Make sure you have the supplies for the 72 hours after the storm," Gov. Jeb Bush warned from Tallahassee, a day after declaring a state of emergency for all Florida.
