CAC Team Seeks To Recapture Bodybuilding Title In Jamaica

In 2005 a 10-member team captured seven medals at the Central American and Caribbean Championships hosted in Miami, Florida. However, that was not enough to successfully defend the title won 2004 in Guyana when the locals won two gold and three silver medals.

This year, led by National Champions Jay Darling and Gina Mackey, the team is poised to recapture the crown.

The 2006 CAC Championships will be held in Kingston, Jamaica September 28-30 with approximately 20 countries and over 100 athletes from around the region competing.

Locally, the 12-member team is putting lots of time working on physiques and trying to fine tone bodies at various workout centers on New Providence and Grand Bahama.

On Wednesday morning, at Better Bodies Gym in the Shirley Street Shopping Plaza, Paul Wilson who won silver in the men's lightweight in 2005 was hard at work of the lateral pull machine.

Mad dash for water!

Grand Bahama residents are readying themselves for whatever Tropical Storm Ernesto brings their way, stocking up on hurricane supplies and buying stores out of gallons of water.

In fact, residents have made a mad dash for the item, which has become the hottest commodity and folks are being advised to stock up early.

With a tropical warning and hurricane watch remaining in effect for Grand Bahama, Bimini, Andros and the Berry Islands, Grand Bahamians are not taking Ernesto lightly.

Yesterday, Andros, the Berry Islands and Bimini experienced four to six inches of rain as rain bands continued over the northwest Bahamas and the Florida keys.

A better organized Ernesto had formed and forecasters say tornadic activity is possible.

As of 5:00 p.m.

New Details about Bahama Murder

Edwin Knowles, 71, was found shot to death in his Bahama home a week ago. Knowles' daughter, Edie Perra, says the murder created devastating questions. The first was from her 4-year-old daughter.

"She asked why mean people hurt granddaddy," Perra said. "And I told her, 'I don't know why mean people hurt grandaddy, but you have to understand that Jesus needed him more than we did.'"

Perra and her family had questions of their own about their father's murder. .

NASA considers delaying shuttle launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The chances that the space shuttle Atlantis would be launched into orbit this week diminished by the hour Sunday as NASA prepared for Tropical Storm Ernesto and the possibility of moving the spacecraft into shelter.

NASA managers planned to meet early Monday before making a final call on whether to move Atlantis indoors or try to launch Tuesday.

There was a 30 percent chance that weather would prohibit a launch Tuesday, and the forecast worsened as the week progressed. Preparations already were under way for a rollback.

Workers on Sunday rolled to the launch pad a gigantic crane that could be used to move generators and other heavy gear in case the shuttle is moved back to the protection of the enormous Vehicle Assembly Building.

Successful sale of The Royal Oasis Hotel

I extend congratulations to the Christie Administration, generally, and the Hon. Obidiah Wilchombe, MP and Minister of Tourism, in particular, on successfully bringing about the sale of the troubled Royal Oasis Hotel in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

This is welcomed news for the long suffering displaced workers at that resort and they may now have an opportunity to rebuild their lives and get a grip on their finances.

It took a bit long to conclude this matter but I've always maintained that it is better late than never at all.

Minister Wilchombe is "the man of the hour" and must be given the praise for remaining focused, determined and eternally optimistic when so many others, including myself, at one point, took a bleak stance.

It has long been my contention that Minister Wilchombe is one of the hardest-working members of the administration of the Rt.

Teens arrested with cocaine

Two teens were arrested at the Grand Bahama International Airport Thursday, after police caught them attempting to smuggle cocaine in a birthday cake.

Two girls reportedly attempted to clear US customs and immigration on August 24 in the Pre-Clearance Lounge, when a security officer noticed a solid object inside the cake on the monitor screen and requested police assistance.

A police officer responded and upon cutting the cake discovered a kilo package of cocaine inside. As a result both girls, one a resident of Windsor Park and the other of Hanna Hill, Eight Mile Rock were arrested and taken into custody at the Drug

Enforcement Unit, along with the illegal narcotics.

They have since been flown to New Providence and are expected to be arraigned in the drug court sometime on

Monday.

Ducks make most of trip to Bahamas

Oregon coach Ernie Kent didn't have much time time to review his basketball team's trip to the Bahamas for five exhibition games, but his quick review Monday was "everything we needed to get out of the trip, we got out of it."

Kent was at Shadow Hills Country Club early Monday morning for a golf tournament that benefits the Children's Miracle Network, which has the coach as its honorary chairman. That duty at the course started about eight hours after Kent and a portion of the team's traveling party arrived back in Eugene, the itinerary off only slightly by a delay in Atlanta.

If that sounds like fairly ambitious scheduling, considering what the Ducks went through last week. They played five games in six nights, and the first three of those games were on consecutive nights with only seven players available.

No mandatory evacuations as Ernesto heads for SC

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Tropical Storm Ernesto fizzled to a tropical depression on its trek across Florida on Wednesday but was expected to pass out to sea and regain tropical storm strength before making a second landfall along the South Carolina coast.

Governor Mark Sanford said the state would not require any mandatory or voluntary evacuations but urged coastal residents, including those on barrier islands in mobile homes and in low-lying areas, to pay attention to the storm which was expected to come ashore late Thursday.

"The storm isn't here yet. There's still a lot of uncertainty," he said. "Let's hope it doesn't intensify."

The 240 National Guardsman who had been mobilized on Tuesday were released from duty Wednesday, Guard spokesman Lt.

Tiger vs. Phil

MEDINAH, Ill. -- Chris DiMarco advised the PGA not to serve alcohol today and Friday. Shreveport's David Toms says this should happen more often. Geoff Ogilvy is an extremely interested bystander.

The PGA Championship begins today with a field of 156, but all eyes (the fans', the media's and even fellow competitors') are focused on the expected slugfest between golf's two most recognizable figures.
