Timeshare owners looking for answers

Two timeshare owners at the now condemned Tyne Beach Terrace want to know what recourse they have since the vacation home club has been closed for almost two years.

The beach-front property was damaged by the twin hurricanes in September 2004 and has yet to come back on-line.

In the months that followed, the tiles began coming up, the electrical installations shorted out and the inner walls became contaminated with mould and mildew.

Salt water also destroyed the electrical components, the concrete and sheet rock walls.

Danish owner Peter Munksnaes had begun repairs on the building in excess of $200,000, but had to stop the work on the 20-unit, four-storey building in December 2004 after a Grand Bahama Port Authority inspector order condemned it.

Francis named to Board

Former Grand Bahama Port Authority Chief Executive Officer and Co-chairman Julian Francis is the newest appointee to the Grand Bahama Yacht Club Board of Directors. In fact, it is a first for New Hope Holdings, which has never had a Bahamian on its board.

The company was recently acquired by Preben Olesen, chairman and chief executive officer of the Grand Bahama Yacht Club, who plans to build a mega yachters' haven by merging the two marinas, constructing a condo hotel, a condominium and townhouse development and a clubhouse in Port Lucaya and a beach club on Taino Beach.

The project is a $500 million undertaking.

Mr Francis' appointment is said to be the first of many plans for Bahamians at the company.

The banker of 30 years had retired his post as Governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas on May 31, 2005 to join the GBPA on a four-year contract, but resigned after only 12 months.

Yachting paradise

The transformation of the Lucaya area into a multi-million dollar yachting paradise is steadily under way and ground is set to be broken next week for a new condo hotel.

The Rotary Club of Lucaya heard yesterday that it is one of the first projects Danish investor Preben Olesen is undertaking since acquiring the Port Lucaya Marina.

He was speaking at the club's weekly luncheon meeting at the Ruby Swiss Restaurant.

The goal is to accommodate the substantial number of mega yachts being built worldwide. One of the challenges is the dredging of the Bell Channel to accommodate some of the bigger yachts.

The developer signed a $6.8 million deal on July 23 with the Grand Bahama Port Authority to acquire the Port Lucaya Marina.

Prime Minister Perry Christie was here to witness the signing moment and pointed out that Olesen will help the government to promote Grand Bahama as a first-class, world-class tourist destination.

Metro briefs

A man accused of numerous violations of fire regulations and St. Lucie County zoning codes was arrested Thursday for violating orders to clean up his property west of Fort Pierce and get proper permits. George Porter Jr., 59, drove away from his property at Angle Road and Avenue D after fire inspectors and county officials called for deputies to arrest him for violating the cease-and-desist order. Sheriff's deputies caught him a short distance away. He remained in the St. Lucie County jail on $500 bail late afternoon Thursday. The county's code enforcement board recently fined him $500 a day for code violations and placed a $20,000 lien on his property, the former site of a drive-in theater.

A Remington pump shotgun reported missing from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office on March 28 was recovered Wednesday afternoon.
