Magnet school principal leads talk in Bahamas

The administrative staff of the Wildwood International Baccalaureate World Magnet School, 6950 N. Hiawatha Ave., presented at the 25th annual conference of the International Baccalaureate of North America and the Caribbean July 15 in Freeport, Bahamas. The presentation, titled "Access for All: The Special Needs Students and the IB," focused on resource programs provided at Wildwood School that have enabled special-needs students to successfully participate in Wildwood's IB program.

The principal, Elena Savoy, led the panel, explaining Wildwood's strategic plan for increasing inclusive special education services in the general classroom. The assistant principal and lead special education teacher, Colette Teasley, demonstrated some of the techniques used to build skills in these students that would allow them to participate fully in activities.

Toward a totally inclusive society

On six recent Sundays, local residents took part in the Leadership Training on Race and Diversity, sponsored by St. Paul Cathedrals Race and Reconciliation Dialogue Group. Those in attendance were from St. Paul and neighboring parishes, as well as other denominations and nearby communities.

According to Dr. Mary McKinney, who chaired the third round of training along with her husband, Dr. Jerome McKinney, the sessions were so successful that the group of participants has asked to have regular meetings to continue the discussions. The McKinneys, members of St. Pauls Race and Reconciliation Dialogue Group, used their educational backgrounds and personal experiences during the six-week training.

Jerome, who hails from the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, is a professor of public policy at the University of Pittsburghs Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, where he has taught public sector finance for 33 years.

Government makes good on promise to teachers

"It's there," exclaimed one teacher yesterday after realizing government made good on its promise to release an $1,800 lump-sum payment to the 3,500 public school teachers.

In fact, the payout came a day early and was not expected until today.

Government and the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) finally agreed on a new contract earlier this month after months of intense negotiations.

It was the first document signed by the two parties since the execution of a Recognition Agreement of 1965 and includes a liberal salary increase amounting to $20.5 million over five years.

The contract also makes provisions for a number of concessions and allowance increases, particularly for heads of departments and coaching allowances.

While a final signing for a new industrial contract is expected to be concluded soon, government has begun the pay-out process.

Chalk's in last-ditch bid

Chalk's airline GM, Roger Nair, was yesterday involved in last-ditch efforts to get the grounded airline into the air. In an emergency meeting in Nassau with officials from the Civil Aviation Department, Mr Nair was trying to overturn the decision on Monday to stop the American company from resuming flights.

A Public Relations worker at the company said General Manager, Roger Nair, flew into The Bahamas to negotiate with officials, so that Chalk's airline could be able to once again resume flights to and from the jurisdiction.

"I believe we're going to have that problem sorted out by then. The General Manager is in Nassau today meeting with the proper authorit[ies] but I can't say right now what's happening with that. But hopefully, we will fly [today]," he said.

Bahamas make big serve for JAVA

When it seemed all else had failed, the Bahamian sports ministry came through for the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JAVA), arranging sponsorship for the island's national senior male team to participate at the Caribbean Volleyball Championship.

JAVA had announced last week that both the male and female national senior teams would not be attending the championship because the association was broke.

But, fittingly described as nothing short of a miracle in a press release issued by the association, JAVA president Pat Garel said she "was personally telephoned (on Tuesday) by the Minister of Sports of The Bahamas, the Honourable Neville Wisdom, with news that he had arranged sponsorship to cover all expenses for the national senior male team to participate in the upcoming Caribbean Volleyball Championship in Bahamas".
