Lula on the road to second term in Brazil - Despite all his troubles, the president seems headed for victory.Mario Canseco - For a brief period, the re-election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was far from a sure thing. A corruption scandal threatened several high-profile members of the governing Worker's Party (PT) in Brazil, and a series of resignations and accusations had weakened the incumbent. The problems began last year, when Brazilian Labour Party (PTB) member Roberto Jefferson declared that members of two political organizations—the Liberal Party (PL) and the Progressive Party (PP)—had received monthly payments of up to $12,000 U.S. from the government in exchange for support in the legislative branch. While Jefferson provided no hard evidence to back his allegations, his statements eventually led to the resignation of some key members of Lula's administration, including chief of staff Jose Dirceu.
'Feel the Rush' was good for Grand BahamaOnce again, over the Emancipation Holiday weekend, the people of Grand Bahama "Felt the Rush!" Thousands came from all over The Bahamas and elsewhere (I came from Boston, USA) to witness a spectacular Junkanoo Parade. The parade featured the three top Junkanoo groups out of Nassau: The Saxons, Valley Boys and One Family. A fourth group with the home court advantage was the Grand Bahama All-Stars, which consisted of an amalgamation of most of the Junkanoo groups on Grand Bahama. A special treat was the participation of Bernard Hanna and his friends from "Sting" along with some of the local "Bushwackers" and "Victory Boys." Most people had their favourite group, but one thing that everyone would agree on is the fact that this year, the groups were better than last year both in terms of costumes and performance.
BTC casting blameGSM cellphone subscribers are receiving weak service because some private citizens are not allowing BTC cell site towers to be installed on their property. This is a "major challenge" for the state-run telephone company, said Tellis Symonette, vice-president of Wireless and Internet Services at the Bahamas Telecommunications Company. "Cell sites require property along the way," said Mr Symonette. "A lot of people really would like to have the coverage but don't want a tower in their back yard or near their home. That's a major problem in New Providence and Abaco," he said. "As far as GSM, we had some difficulty acquiring property along the way for cell sites. It's important that the cell sites go where they were designed to go or as near to it as possible because if you don't do that you won't get the ultimate coverage that you really want to get.
