California Focus: Terminating new drug developmentIt's the law of unintended consequences. Quite simply, price controls will result in less access to life-saving medicine for Californians. There are better, more effective, free-market solutions. For example, the pharmaceutical assistance programs offered by most large drug companies already provide their medicines at deep discounts even free to those in need. To improve these programs for the people of California and the nation as a whole, Gov. Schwarzenegger could work toward authorizing the pharmaceutical industry to create a single, unified program allowing qualified individuals to register one time for all available prescription discounts. Such a beneficial program currently is prohibited by anti-trust laws. If our political leaders (whether in Sacramento or Washington) opt for ill-advised price controls, breakthrough drugs will become unprofitable.
Floridians brace for worst as Ernesto churns closerPEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Diane Salmon rummaged through cookware yesterday at a Target store, hundreds of miles from a churning Tropical Storm Ernesto. Her cart held plastic utensils, water, pasta and a propane-powered stove.Like many southern Florida residents, she was determined to avoid past struggles for supplies. "I've got four kids and a husband at home," Salmon said. "We learned last year, you get sick of tuna fish and peanut butter on crackers really fast." Across the region, many residents appeared to heed the urging of Florida officials not to wait for Ernesto to become a hurricane before stocking up on supplies and making other emergency preparations. Motorists had to wait up to an hour and a half for gas at several gas stations, and long lines also formed for food and other provisions. Tropical Storm Ernesto Takes Aim at U.S.Steve Saunders and his family drove seven hours from central Florida to the end of the Florida Keys, blissfully unaware they were heading the wrong way as Tropical Storm Ernesto crept ever closer.Tourists had been ordered to evacuate the Keys, where Floridians were expected to feel Ernesto's first effects. But lying by a hotel pool Monday evening, Saunders said his family planned to stay in Key West and ride it out. Driving back up the peninsula didn't really make sense, as Ernesto was forecast to follow the same path north, Saunders said. "It's going to get you if you drive up Florida," he said. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said Ernesto could reach hurricane strength by the time it makes landfall on the Florida mainland. The storm was expected to strengthen as it approached the Keys and southeast Florida as early as Tuesday night _ exactly one year after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast.
The gay community's still the same -- just differentIt had been 16 years since I covered Key West for The Miami Herald and I looked forward to traveling there for the first time in more than a decade.People kept warning me: ``You'll be disappointed. It's not gay anymore. All the gay people are gone.'' They're wrong. There are still plenty of gay people in Key West. And plenty for a gay tourist to do. My partner, Ric Katz, and I spent two nights in Key West a few weeks ago. We drove from Miami. Just as it was two decades ago, there is virtually no recognizable gay life along U.S. 1 until you cross the bridge from Stock Island. But once you enter Key West, you know you're not in Kansas the first time a drag queen rides by on a moped. Ric and I arrived in the Southernmost City about 4 p.m.
GB police expands anti terrorist efforts at sea portThe Royal Bahamas Police Force of Grand Bahama has heightened their anti-terrorist initiatives at the Lucayan Harbour and other Grand Bahama based marinas. The Police Department now has a team of divers whose responsibilities include, ensuring the safety of marine facilities. This was evident as Police divers did a safety check at Lucayan Harbour on Wednesday prior to the arrival of the U.S. Navy vessel Curts, whose 225 ship personnel are in town for shore leave. Superintendent of Police Basil Rahming, who was on hand to watch the police divers carry out an underwater search at the Lucayan Harbour said: "We are so proud, of the members of the Royal Bahamas Police Force with what has transpired here at the Lucayan Harbour this morning. "A United States Frigate Class Naval vessel, the USS Curts, is visiting our island for the next three days and from our Police operations, and using this new capability that we recently acquired, was able to put a four man dive team into the water to properly scan, search for underwater explosive devices or anything that could endanger the security of this vessel, and secure this berthing," he explained.
