air fares discount bahamasBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationWestJet looks to fly higher with OneworldWestJet Airlines Ltd. is holding preliminary talks to join Oneworld, a global alliance that would lift the carrier into aviation's major leagues. The early-stage discussions come as WestJet tries to narrow the gap between it and the country's largest carrier, Air Canada, a member of the rival Star Alliance. Air Canada, with the advantage of garnering connecting Star Alliance passengers, typically fills more seats than WestJet does. In the first seven months of this year, Air Canada's load factor -- the proportion of available seats filled -- averaged 81.7 per cent, compared with WestJet's 78.9 per cent. With Oneworld in its sights, Calgary-based WestJet is seeking to graduate beyond its roots as a regional niche player. Over the past two years, the discount carrier has introduced frills such as leather seats and satellite television.
WestJet to fly to the CaribbeanWestJet has won the right to fly Canadians to the Caribbean. The Calgary-based discount carrier has been licensed to operate scheduled service between Canada and the Caribbean countries of Aruba, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon bills the move as one that will offer more choice to Canadian travellers. "The expanded air services do not restrict how often WestJet can fly to these destinations, which will facilitate trips between Canada and some of the leading tourist destinations in the region," Mr. Cannon said in a statement. The announcement came just hours after WestJet said it will begin flying to Nassau this winter.

Ernesto swirls into MiamiTROPICAL Storm Ernesto swirled toward Florida today after losing much of its punch over Cuba, though forecasters said there was an outside chance it could regain hurricane strength later in the week. After drenching Cuba, Ernesto headed back to sea early today and was expected to make landfall in southern Florida late at night or early tomorrow. The most likely track has the storm sweeping over the Florida Keys chain of islands and blowing ashore in swampland south-west of Miami, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC). The storm would then travel along south Florida, head back out to sea and eventually come ashore again in South Carolina, though forecasters point out that predicting a storm's trajectory is far from an exact science.
