Bahamas - Cruises

Most cruises to the Bahamas last three or four nights, though some Caribbean cruises visit a Bahamas cruise port as part of a longer itinerary

What is it about islands? Are we lured to them by a mystique set adrift on a tropical breeze? Or is it for a really good tan?

Are our deepest senses around by the gentle sifting of sand between our toes? Or by a mango daiquiri? Is there something in the song of a steel drum that sweetens the rhythm of our own hearts? Or do we just want to know what it's like to come face-to-face with a parrotfish? We still don't know.

In the Bahamas, the air and land are filled with hundreds of unique species of birds, animals and plant life. Shipwrecks lay patiently, waiting for you to plumb their depths. European influences greet you in the homes, language and culture of the people. And exotic native dishes, handed down through the centuries, enticing townspeople and travelers alike. Some things have changes over the last five hundred years. But standing on the deck of your cruise ship, approaching this place, you'll have no idea what they are.

The laid back atmosphere of the islands of The Bahamas make them the perfect ports to relax and unwind. The sun drenched shores of Nassau and Freeport feature sophisticated shopping, sizzling nightlife, delicious Caribbean cuisine and much more. And, the pristine white sand, turquoise waters, gentle surf and exotic marine life provide a paradise for any beach aficionado. With world-class fishing, historical forts, Victorian mansions, museums, vibrant bazaars and colorful Caribbean houses -- there's always plenty to see and do

Head for these laid-back islands on casual Bahamas cruises, most of which depart from Florida. Cruise to the Bahamas and you'll find pretty beaches, good snorkeling and opportunities for water-skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, windsurfing and more. Cruises to the Bahamas also offer colorful artwork, spirited dances and lively music. Nassau's duty-free shopping and famous straw market lure shoppers in search of handicrafts. At night, many Bahamas cruise passengers go ashore to try their luck at resort casinos.

Nassau on the Bahamas is the introductory destination that many cruisers experience on their first cruise. Three or four-day cruises leave from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or Port Canaveral and sail the short distance to Nassau or to Freeport in the Bahamas, giving first-time passengers a taste of cruising.

There are actually over 700 islands in the Bahamian archipelago stretching over 100,000 square miles of sea from the eastern coast of Florida to the northern coast of Cuba and Haiti. The islands derive their name from the Spanish baja mar, which means shallows. Of the hundreds of islands in the group, less than 50 are inhabited, and cruise ships usually visit only two ports--either Nassau or Freeport.
