The Bahamas - Land and Water Transportation

Water taxis, land taxis, and ferries are the basic ways to travel in the Bahamas. Ferries and land taxis are ok, but many people like water taxis because they great for sightseeing

There are a few ways to travel around The Bahamas, and each one offers something different. Most tourists prefer a water taxi, generally because it is much windier and the water splashes to keep them cool. Land based taxis are great too because they are faster, but when traffic slows down, it can get hot in the back seat.

The slowest mode of transportation is the ferry, but it is dependable, it run few times during the day, so you can easily schedule a ride. Choosing your main mode of transportation really depends on what you plan to see during your Bahamas vacation.

Many people think that a water taxi ride is rough; however, it is not, water taxi rides are quite smooth. The water sometimes splashes, but no one seems to care, because when it is hot, the cold water really helps. To get on a water taxi, you have to walk in the hot sun, so bring a sunhat and bottle water with you.

If taking long walks make you tired, do not worry, a walk to a water taxi is not that long, and it is just like a walk through the city. During your walk, you have to be careful because the traffic runs differently in The Bahamas; cars drive on the left side of the street.

Once you board the taxi and it starts moving, you will see some beautiful scenery during the ride. You will see many million-dollar homes, and plenty of boats and yachts; this is why many people prefer water taxis because you cannot see these things in a land taxi.

There is one negative thing about a water taxi; it is the gas fuse smell, because it can get very strong. You cannot avoid smelling it, it covers the entire taxi, but do not let this stop you from taking this ride, although the gas is strong, the amazing scenery makes up for it.

People on a schedule should use ferries because they are dependable. Ferries run from 9:00am to 6:00pm, and they leave every 30 minutes, so if you plan to visit a place like Paradise Island for an entire day, keep an eye on your watch, because if you miss the last ferry, you have to wait until the next day.

A land taxi is a completely different experience, and you should use one if you need to get somewhere fast. Lands taxis are not good for sightseeing because the driver usually takes the fastest route available, which sometimes avoid the best sights. The quickest routes are usually found down alleys, so if you want to see The Bahamas’ attractions while in a taxi, you have to tell the driver to take you on a different path.

Each mode of transportation suits a certain purpose; water taxis are cool, refreshing, and great for sightseeing. A ferry is the slowest; it should be used for scheduled trips to another island. Land based taxis are the best way to travel to local stores to shop; the drivers drive quite fast, which prevent any chances of sightseeing from the window

Easy access to The Bahamas is one reason for its long-standing popularity as a winter holiday destination. Only a few miles from the south Florida coast, in fact closer than Caribbean destinations, the islands can be reached quickly either by air or by sea.

The Bahama Islands temperatures rarely drop below 60 degrees F, or rise above 90 degrees F. Most of the rain fall occurs in the summer months. The sea temperature ranges from the low 80's in the summer to about 74 degrees F in the winter
