The Bahamas - Scooter and Bicycle Issues

You have to be cautious when riding a bicycle or a scooter in the Bahamas because there are many risks. Traffic, crazy drivers, and bad streets are some of the dangers you will face in Nassau

Many people in the Bahamas use gas-powered vehicles for transportation and fewer people use scooters or bicycles. There is a good reason why, but the main one deals with the island’s crazy drivers. It takes guts to use a bicycle in the Bahamas because there are so many hazards during a ride. If you think you can handle the risks, try it, but you have to keep your eyes open and your feet ready in case you need to hit the brakes.

Nassau is a bad place to ride a bicycle for a number of reasons, and if you are not careful, you could end up off your bike and on the ground. The streets may cause tumbles because it is in bad condition; there are cracks and missing pieces everywhere, and if you peddle into one, your bike will throw you.

Another problem involves the lack of signs, you never know if you are going down a one-way street or regular street. This is not an issue for the locals; they lived in Nassau for quite some time, so they know what streets are which. The traffic is outrageous as well; it sometimes backs up which prevents bikers from riding through it, and even worst, the drivers themselves sometimes act crazy.

They may act like this because they want to get to work fast, but whatever the reason, it is just not safe for bikers when they act that way. When crazy drivers drive reckless, it causes accidents, which occur quite frequently in Nassau.

Not all the areas in the Bahamas are bad, but there are still risks, especially if you ride a bike during the morning. Morning is when the locals go to work, and many of them prefer to walk instead of using a car. When locals walk to work early in the morning, they usually get breakfast to go, generally with some kind of liquid beverage.

If you ride your bicycle in the morning, you have to be careful, you might bump into someone causing their breakfast to waste on them, or yourself, and it could possibly hurt someone if it is hot.

Besides bicycles, there are also scooters available for rent in the Bahamas; if you plan to rent one, the same safely rules apply. The scooter vendor is location near the port; when you rent your scooter, it is best to use it only on the beach. You must be careful whenever you park it, because if you go too far, someone may steal it. If this happens, you are responsible for the scooter, so make sure you get a friend to watch it if you decide to take a swim.

Bicycles are risky in Nassau due to damaged streets, crazy drivers, and bad traffic, so you should try to avoid riding them. Scooters are ok for quick rides to the beach, but you have to keep an eye on it because you are responsible if someone takes it.

Easy access to The Bahamas is one reason for its long-standing popularity as a winter holiday destination. Only a few miles from the south Florida coast, in fact closer than Caribbean destinations, the islands can be reached quickly either by air or by sea.

The Bahama Islands temperatures rarely drop below 60 degrees F, or rise above 90 degrees F. Most of the rain fall occurs in the summer months. The sea temperature ranges from the low 80's in the summer to about 74 degrees F in the winter
